Acapulco Plus a Peacock

My favorite childhood game show.

I know famous people. And they’re really cool.

The famous person I’m thinking of now is an editor for the Associated Press and, well, he’s been a friend since our freshman year of college.

In fact, we were on the residence hall student government team together and I have a very bizarre, yet fond memory of the two of us squished into the backseat of a car the size of a butter pat after a trip to Costco for event supplies.

Every once in a while he passes on the stories he’s been editing that give him a special kick. Here’s one that made me laugh, too:

Peacocks, prostitutes found inside Acapulco prison

Doesn’t that headline make you salivate? Peacocks! Prostitutes! Prison! A wonderful batch of “P” words that should work together; then you add Acapulco and it’s the epitome of brilliant headline writing!

The story is funny. Somehow two peacocks, 100 fighting cocks, 19 prostitutes and two sacks filled with marijuana made their way into the Acapulco prison, but it seems none of the prisoners made their way out.

Which makes sense, because who doesn’t want to hang out with peacocks?!

This story prompts once last thought: Alex Trebek.

Not the serious, falsely wise Alex of Jeopardy… I’m remembering Alex back in the day of Classic Concentration

I loved that show. I think it was the single most influential game show of my childhood. Well… that may be overstating the situation but there’s a close competition between Classic Concentration, Sale of the Century and Family Feud. (I’ve since added a love of Lingo and Deal or No Deal to my game show passions.)

Anyway, for those of you who watched Classic Concentration, didn’t they have a trip to Acapulco in every episode? Each time I watched you could win, say, a set of golf clubs or a trip to Acapulco… A new car, a BBQ grill or a trip to Acapulco… A date with the model or a trip to Acapulco…

I always wanted to go to Acapulco. But now I’ll never be able to go without also thinking of peacocks, prostitutes and pot.

Those are my deep thoughts of the day. Sorry to disappoint if you were looking for deep insight… I’m too busy Googling old episodes of Sale of the Century to offer anything more.

What were your favorite game shows growing up? BTW, I’ve discovered Simon Cowell was a contestant on Sale of the Century UK. I’m pretty sure my life is richer for knowing that fact.

I don’t know what to say. It’s awkward to know that about you. But I’m proud it was in a beautiful location. 🙂 Did they win the trip from a game show?
