Fast Asleep

I’m still sad my little girl has grown up enough to start losing teeth, but there you have it.  Uno has already lost her two bottom teeth and is now working on her two top front teeth.

Perhaps she will have new front teeth by Christmas.  If not, we’re going to be singing, “All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” ad naseum.  And it will be funny every time.

When she lost her first tooth it was at school.  Her teacher sent her to the office and they gave her a special pink plastic treasure box to keep the tooth safe until she got home.

Yesterday she rediscovered the tooth treasure box in the bottom of her toy chest.  It’s made her think an awful lot about teeth, specifically her own front teeth.

At first she named her two loose teeth Rabbit and Turtle, because one was wigglier than the other.  Then she changed her mind and named them earthworm and hummingbird.

Today they are named caterpillar and butterfly.  I can’t wait to see what they will be named tomorrow – and what on earth will happen when one falls out?!  It will be like a set of twins separated from one another, a Greek tragedy in the making!

All of this tooth discussion brought an interesting connection, however.

“Mommy, I was wondering if Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are brother and sister?” Uno asked me today.

“No, they aren’t related at all,” I answered.  “One’s a big, fat, jolly guy with a bushy beard and the other is a teensy, tiny fairy.  Why would you think they’re related?”

“Well, I thought they must be because you have to be fast asleep for both of them before they visit!” she said.

That’s it!  She’s brilliant!  I don’t know why it takes a five-year-old to see these connections, but it’s now obvious Santa and the Tooth Fairy are related, looks notwithstanding.

I wish I were so smart on my own….

we’ve started getting all these questions like “where does the tooth fairy live?” and “where does she get her money from?” and it never ends. i just sit there and lie and lie and lie to my kids… this isn’t so good, is it? 🙂
