3 Simple Questions: College by Claton’s Voice

Claton’s Voice is the next best thing to sliced bread for audio!

The more I delve into the world of writing the more I realize there are arenas of the business where I am ignorant.

One of these areas has been the world of the audiobook… until I spent some time talking to Claton of Claton’s Voice. Turns out James Earl Jones isn’t the only dude out there with an amazing voice!

Claton is in the business of making good stuff sound even better! His most recent project, The Kings of Casino Park: Black Baseball in the Lost Season of 1932, is not only an interesting listen, but also gives him the opportunity to have his voice described as “personable, engaging, and trustworthy.”

How fun is that?! I’m personally waiting for someone to say his voice is like “buttah” and absolutely as exciting as David Beckham’s in that fast food commercial.

(But because Claton is a professional I’m certain he’ll be able to enunciate clearly and would never pronounce “thumbs,” “fums.” If this reference confuses you, please, please, please, check out this video of David Beckham on the Ellen show. And if you have an accident from laughing while watching, don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

Claton started training his voice while attending college, so I thought he’d be a great person to answer 3 Simple Questions about College. Enjoy!

1. What’s the grossest thing you experienced while in college? “Probably one of two pranks I heard about. Yes, heard – I had no part in them! 1) A suitcase used as a toilet for a few days by a quad of guys was hidden in the lobby of a girls dorm. For many days. 2) Live geese were caught at a lake near the college and released into a girl’s room. Geese have very runny excrement – and they do it a lot.”

2. What’s the sweetest thing you experienced while in college? “My wife says this question is probably easier to answer by a girl, and I’m in no place to disagree. The only thing that comes to mind is when my wife agreed to marry me. That was pretty “sweet.””

3. What’s the most humbling thing you experienced while in college? “When I was leading worship music a lot at the college and at other ministries, I got a few letters thanking me for something I said, or a set that really helped connect them to God in a more powerful or intimate way than they had before. Those were some of the confirmations that affirmed my calling of using the voice God gave me for ministry.”

Bonus Question: What advice would you offer to freshmen? “Freshmen: 1) I would be hesitant to date much as freshmen. People are often exposed to many things for the first time: different environments, different world-views, away from parents, etc. It is very common for an individual to really be a different person as they (hopefully) mature; there are many people that regret a relationship early in college – especially since many just coming into college tend to really rush into trying to find “the one.” 2) Pick a major that is readily marketable. You want to make sure that you’ll be able to get a job when you come out of college based on your education. There are exceptions, especially if you plan to immediately pursue a Master’s, but this is advice that would have helped many people I know.”
