Long-Distance Light & Love

I wouldn’t say I’m addicted to Pinterest but there’s no doubt I’ve been enjoying the different ideas I see there and have even pinned a few items myself.

I don’t know everything there is to know about the world but I was more than a little surprised and curious to discover the long distance concept pillow.

This pillow, and its mate, are digitally connected via a sensor and smart phone application. Each person wears a ring sensor to sleep at night. When someone hits the sack, the “mate” pillow lights up and the sound of their heartbeat is transmitted.

The designer, Joanna Montgomery, said: “Each person has a sensor ring that they wear to bed, and a fabric panel which goes inside their pillow case. The sensor picks up your heartbeat and wirelessly transmits it to the other person’s pillow via bluetooth on your mobile phone, so when you put your head on your own pillow, you hear your partner’s heart beating.”

The fabric panel contains two small flat speakers and a rechargeable battery, and lights up when the other person’s head touches their pillow.

Weird, huh? The reviews I read online were full of comments from those in long distance relationships who thought the idea was fabulous. I even found a similar concept pillow with LED lights… you draw a picture on the surface of your pillow and the “mate” pillow lights up with the visual wherever it sits.

Call me Debbie Downer, but I’m not so sure I want to park my noggin on a pillow transmitting electric currents all night. I’m already nervous enough I’m going to get hand cancer from my relationship with my Blackberry. (Although, to be fair, that relationship has been sincerely compromised since the job change and loss of unlimited data plan!)

Plus, would you actually sleep if you were listening to a heartbeat under your ear all night? I’m not sure I would! These days, I find myself getting very territorial about my space while I’m sleeping – and even hearing the dogs shift position in their crate in the living room wakes me up!

Now, the pillow isn’t for sale at this point. But do you think you would buy it if it were available? Why or why not?

Hm. I suspect that many a suspicious wife will insist their business-traveling husband use one, so they can have their suspicions quelled, knowing he is sleeping instead of gallivanting (as originally suspected).

Will I buy a set? Absolutely not. Like you, I couldn’t sleep with light and noise bombarding me all night. Meh.
